Interior Minister and Chinese ambassador are being briefed on the working of DNA testing laboratory, first of its kind in Pakistan, established in Islamabad.

The government has now fixed the ex-factory price of sugar at Rs33.35 per kg, inclusive of 15 per cent general sales tax, to control its price in the domestic market.

Mills would now have to pay GST on the fixed value of Rs29 per kg instead of earlier trend of declaring different values by different mills.

With the fixation of ex-factory sugar price (Rs29 per kg value sugar plus Rs4.35 GST), the government expected that the the commodity’s price would come down from Rs38 per kg to Rs37.

Two foetuses were recovered from the abdomen of a two-month-old girl after an operation at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims). However, the baby expired after seven hours of the operation, the first of its kind in the medical history of the country.

Prof Zahir Abbasi, a paediatric surgeon at Pims told that the baby girl, Nazia, had been operated upon after various tests, including ultra-sound and X-ray, on suspicion that she had a tumour or water in her abdomen.

The baby was brought to the hospital two weeks ago by her 30- year-old mother, from a village near Abbottabad, after her condition deteriorated.

According to doctors, the physical condition of the baby was weak and she had been continuously vomiting since her birth. The size of her abdomen was large and she had swelling on her body.

The main attraction at the Marghzar Zoo, the lion king, has died at the age of 20. “The animal died of prolonged illness as he was suffering from arthritis,” the Zoo Director, Raja Javed said. He said the normal age of a lion is 15 to 18 years. “It was a natural death,” he claimed.

“The lion had been under treatment for one year, but due to old age he could not survive,” the official said.

However, sources in the zoo said the African lion died of leg injuries and lack of proper medical care by the zoo authorities.
