Construction of high-rise building in Blue Area stopped

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) Wednesday stopped construction of a high-rise building in Blue Area claiming the structure was being raised without prior approval of design from the authority.

A CDA official told ‘The News’ the developers of the building previously were served notices asking them to get design vetted and approved by the competent authority. “Previously, we served a number of notices to the developers of 24-storied Pak Telecom but they paid no heed to warnings,” he said.

According to new building, released by the government and CDA, every high-rise building in Islamabad should be constructed according to Seismic Zone-3. For this purpose, the structural design be approved by the CDA and or recognised structural engineers and consultants.

The CDA sources said the construction of Pak Telecom Tower was suspended with the approval of senior official who also okayed the operation to stop work till design of the building is okayed by the Building Control Section.

The sources said the developers were allowed only to carry excavation work as their building plan also included four basements but they also started raising structure. “The construction work will be allowed only when they submit their proposed design to the building control section and gets its approval,” an official said.

Japanese Film Fest… Youkoso!

For those who know not a single word of Japanese like me, Youkoso thanks to a handy dandy online dictionary means welcome and a welcome it is to some cultural activity in our city.

The Japanese film festival is being celebrated with the joint efforts of the Japanese Embassy, the Pakistan-Japan Cultural Association and MEXT Alumni Association. The film festival is an opportunity for us to learn a little not only about Japanese Socio-cultural values but also the way films are perceived, made and the treatment of specific film topics in Japan, also a a society with a very strong, traditional society.

The film festival will be open to public at the Islamabad Club Auditorium on August 23 and August 24 2006. Films being shown are “Sanjuro” (1962) and “Robocon” (2003) reflecting the changes in the Japanese Film Industry over the last 40 years.

Inauspicious Start

The non-stop (43-Up, 44 Down) Buraq Express train that was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz just this Monday afternoon (August 14), at Rawalpindi railway station arrived from Hyderabad nearly six hours late on Wednesday.

The Buraq Express that is scheduled to run between Karachi and Islamabad had an inauspicious start arriving nearly 2 hours late at Hyderabad on Tuesday on it’s first outaward bound journey.(Railways traffic has been diverted to Hyderabad from Karachi due to a bridge collapse).
