Trying to Save Face

corruption.jpgThere is no longer any doubt of the linkages between corruption, poverty and human rights abuses. The creation of an Anti-Corruption Day is in large part a result of the international lobbying efforts by Transparency International to recognize worldwide anti-graft initiatives.December 9 marks the day that the UN Convention against Corruption was first opened for signing in Merida, Mexico in 2003.

(Mozzart’s 8th Symphony starts playing in the background now) National Accountability Bureau (NAB) organized a conference and walk here on December 9 (Saturday) to observe the World’s anti-corruption day. Theoratically it was organized in a befitting manner to raise awareness against the menace of corruption. Prominent personalities representing various segments of society were invited to join NAB in its efforts.

Well right. Here is some reality check.

For 2006 : In terms of freedom Pakistan is has been rated a country with 5.5 points meaning, Not Free (Scale being Free, Partly Free, and Not Free)In terms of corruption perceptions index Pakistan is at 142 (on scale of 1-163)
