Going Solo

Pakistan%20Alpine%20Club-Islamabad.jpgFor those who have been following winter expeditions to the Himalayan-Karakoram giants would already know that Simone Moro is going solo for WINTER Broad Peak. Simone was here in Islamabad in the last week of December where he was given a formal welcome by Pakistan Alpine Club . I had posted about early about the Polish Team arriving in Islamabad. So these are the only two teams going for winter headers.

The only non-Polish climber to have bagged a virgin winter 8000+ summit; Simone Moro wants more. And with permits virtually free for Karakorum winter climbs – that’s where Simone is headed, alone.

After making the first winter summit of Shisha Pangma in January 2005 with Polish Piotr Morawski, Simone can pick and choose his peak in Pakistan – where all 8000ers wait for a first winter climb.

Right now Simone’s bold winter climb attempt has turned into a nightmare all too familiar to many Himalayan climbers; his expedition logistics are a mess. After acclimatizing on Nanga Parbat with the Polish team for a few days, a helicopter was to lift Simone and his porter Shain to Broad Peak’s BC by January 7. That’s when Simone was told that the chopper would only go to Concordia, and the two men would have to haul 1200 kilos (approx 2700 lbs) of gear and supplies (including 1000 lbs of kerosene) on foot.

You can follow the details of his expedition here.
