SMS Scam

The means and way of making money are never scarce if someone, having a sharp intellect, resources to illegitimate practices – and such practice are in vogue at least in the twin cities these days.
“Double Your Balance” is an SMS being circulated widely, by apparently an individual or two, to various subscribers of a certain mobile company tempting them to enhance their balance by punching the numbers in their mobile sets. The SMS contains the numbers to be punched in the mobiles. But as soon as the numbers are punched the subscriber, instead of doubling his balance, loses whatever he has in his balance.
Nafees Malik, a Telenor service subscriber said that he received an SMS at his number from an anonymous cell number that contained the following message :
“TELENOR apni kamyabi ki khushi main double balance laya. Ye code milaen *1*1*92345——-*0044*444# or OK karein. Aap ka balance double ho jae ga. Hai na mazay ki baat”
Nafees first tried to reply the message on the same number to verify the identity of the sender, it could not be delivered despite repeated attempts. He then decided to make a call, but this time too, he failed. Then he decided to follow the instructions of unknown sender and as he pressed send button he received a message “Rs. 44 have been sent to 0345-8746*** through Telenor Smart Share”.
Some other people also got robbed. A Customer relations officer at Telenor refused to comment on the situation saying “We are not authorized to make statements”.
