New Airport At Last

Vision_Islamabad_Airport.jpgI do not really know if we should consider our current airport near Rawalpindi of international standards or not, but one thing is for sure, it is not sufficent to cater the current public demands.

However it now seems that things might change for the better. Ground breaking of the new Islamabad airport is going to be held on April 7. The new Islamabad Airport will be the most modern and biggest airport of the country having dual runways and designed capacity to meet future requirement of next 100 years.

The new airport sprawling over 3700 acres of land would be located on Tarnol-Fateh Jhang road about 30km off Islamabad. The project will cost about Rs 35 billion and would be built by the Civil Aviation Authority with its own resources on self-finance basis and would be completed in two stages in four years.

The contract for the first phase involving ground levelling and compaction has already been given and would be completed in about one year at a cost of Rs 1.5 billion.

After the completion of the first phase, the work on the second phase for construction of terminal building and other infrastructure would be started costing about Rs 33 billion

    I surely hope they do more than the ‘ground breaking’ this time around! For a capital, we have a really pathetic airport and should have been looked after much before Lahore or Karachi!

    Great news though :)

    Bullshit;

    Most probably another ploy to get the real estate prices in that area high and after earning some dirty ruppiah over it, go all mum again.

    And in any case, even if it is built, it would really be a waste of capital to build an airport larger than the lahore one in the area. Which routes would use it, pray tell me? Islamabad to Chaklala for the great M?

    The rendering accompanying this post isn’t what they’re planning to build. This particular design was done by a German firm some back in the 80s.

    ^ The one in Lahore was built at a cost of Rs. 10 Billion ‘only’ and it’s pretty good IMO. Isloo one would definitely be better.

    @backpacker: the latest renderings haven’t been released yet.
