Depression…Fashion Or Crises?

Mental_Depression.jpgIn a recent study carried out here in the capital they have found that the number of patients suffering from depression is increasing in Islamabad and a majority of them are women, About 50 to 60 patients with psychological disorders visit the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) daily. The number is higher than it was during the same period last year (January to March),

The psychiatrists observed that a majority of the depression patients were teenage girls, and said that parents did not usually take their children’s depression seriously and avoided taking them to a psychiatrist for consultation and treatment. In such a situation, the distraught children are left with no choice but to use tranquillisers, alcohol and drugs such as heroin and hashish for relief and relaxation.

It has became fashionable to call depression a disease, to medicalize it. And certainly neurotransmitters like serotonin and norepinephrine are involved in depression. But if you ask the more critical question–is biology the cause of depression?–the best data suggest that genes account for about one in five cases. The idea that a chemical imbalance causes depression, rather than reflects it, ignores the fact that the brain’s biochemistry responds to our ways of thinking–in short, to life experience.

Question: Hey what are you doing over the weekend?
Answer: Nohing, weekends are boring

These are the common words you here from people, especially women in the capital. As men have ample opportunities to go out and socialize with other people, they probably tend to suffer less from bouts of lonliness and depression. On the other hand, reuduction of any spiritual influence in peoples life is also a contributing factor for many cases who cannot find peace within. By and large I feel there due to lesser variety of entertainment activities like sports, gyms, parks, entertainment centers and to some extent the disorganized method of life in the capital these days maybe the cause. Relationship issues and financial crises may also be a compounding factor. Many people do not realise but I think that the infrastructure state of the capital, like broken roads, construction going on everywhere, and the general atmosphere in the country might also be a contributing factor.

In addition to those found in adult depression, causes of teen and childhood depression, or apparent triggers, include additional and often unique situations.

Social rejection
Family turmoil
Failing exams

While the triggers or causes of teenage depression may not appear such major events to many adults, it is the sufferer’s perception that is so important.

Psychiatrists say if such patients are not properly taken care of, they are bound to face rather complicated psychological and physical problems. Self-medication by people suffering from anxiety and depression was increasing.

Doctors at PIMS say that depression is a common medical condition characterised by different physical and psychological symptoms, including profound sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in usually enjoyable activities and other symptoms that impair a person’s ability to function.

What do citizens of Islamabad think can be done to bring the majority out from this state of downward spiraling condition?. Your comments here can be quite valuable.

well. a very nice topic, though it doesnt seem quite relevant to the metrobloggin islamabad.

The more a person remains engaged or active in some good activity, the more he can get rid of depressive thoughts. unfortunately our educational system doesnt teach us such things and most of us fail to even think about increasing our Emotional Quotient ever.

Anyways, its good that the awareness for depression is increasing in the country.

Major causes are late marriages, specially among overaged girls. In addition to self pity and nobody cares about me thoughts they have equal chances of additional symptoms of schizophrenia.Unemployment is also one factor.Money in your pocket can cure many “psychological” disorders. And this is very true in case of city like Islamabad where skyhigh prices and rents are taking toll on peoples mental health and peace of mind. How can you live a normal happy life if all your earnings go into paying rents, bills or school fees even after working like a dog.All these worries and problems keep on raising the anger or frustration within a person and he ultimately releases his aggression by overreacting to some minor triggering event or suffers a nervous breakdown. My grandfather used to say “Puttar ziada na parhya(study) kar.Banda sochaan wich pae jaanda ae”.Now i realise how true he was as i’ve never seen a man more peaceful and contented than him.If you have time i recommend movie “Falling Down” starring Michael Douglas.

OK I take my emotional stance back :&

But one major reason and that too specially for girls in their teens is lesser scope of physical activities … if you speak of rock climbing et al., not everyone is that enthusiastic but daily or 3-4 days a week gaming sessions, etc. can help a lot in moving the focal point of your energies and thoughts …!

And as above three monkeys rightly pointed out for the working class supporting their families one major reason is the ever-increasing cost of living in the capital …!

But its good that CDA has come up with some nice playgrounds for kids, walking tracks for adults, hoping a few libraries come up too … ! To fight the depression you’ve to take an initiation to fight with ur inner-self first :>

Care to explain causes of depression in so called western rich countries? lack of wealth? lack of outside activities? what?

I have seen TONS of happiness on the faces of so called impoverished kids. They are richer than you can ever dream of.

Enjoy the rat race till your miserable death.

@Three Monkeys: I guess bliss can come in two ways, one from ignorance, and the other from knowledge. One from denial and second from confrontation. Now it depends on you which path do you want to take.

@A for [PINE] Apple: It can be a “man” in the pic with pony tail..:-} Why can’t it be a rock star with a bad concert today! One of my friend was a psychatrist and he told me that wealth, fame, and fortune cannot guarantee a depression free life. Infact in most of the cases, the most affluent sometimes suffer more severe pangs of depression. The important thing is to find the root cause of depression first which can be due to any reason and then work towards getting out of it with comittment. Easier said than done though…

yah in hollywood (and a few cases in bollywood) an “insight” into real lives of the richy rich tells the real depressing tales … wealth cant erase the depressions though it can be a cause in itself.

BTW, fortunately or unfortunately Lollywood is paaak of any such depressions – LOLZ

It was quite depressing to read all this. There can be so many reasons for this stat. Unequal distribution of wealth is one of the major reasons. What about those teenagers who use drugs for fun? Using drugs is not the only indication for depression though. I personally was diagnosed IN DEPRESSION six months back. The cause was long working hours and lack of rest. I was unaware of this thing until It started to disturb my sleep clock. So it depends what is bugging you to get depressed.
