Military Inc. Launched and Banned

Ayesha Siddiqa with her Book The stated book already causing ripples en masse by Dr. Ayesha Siddiqa (military analyst) was to be launched on Thursday. As per schedules and bookings, Islamabad Club was the decided venue until the club canceled the booking of its space. Also, all the other renowned hotels and restaurants in Islamabad were instructed not to allow their halls for the opening of this very book.

This all led to the actual Launch Ceremony taking place in a room located on third-floor of a building owned by a NGO.

A detailed overview of it is published in Dawn … pasting a part here:

This is a book on Pakistan’s armed forces. It is, however, different from the books so far written on the army such as those by Stephen Cohen, Hassan Abbas, Hussain Haqqani and the latest entrant to the rank, Zahid Hussain. Ayesha Siddiqa’s Military Inc focuses on the economic empire that has been built up by the armed forces in Pakistan. Milbus or the military economy, as the author terms it, is distinct from the defence budget. It does not fall under the ministry of defence and its profits accrue, without any accountability, to some individuals in the top echelon of the army, navy and air force.

And about the author of this book:

Dr. Ayesha Siddiqa is a military analyst with a PhD in war studies from King’s College, London. Her recently published book, Military Inc: Inside Pakistan’s Military Economy has already created ripples, with the ISPR sending rejoinders to the media without actually reading the book from cover to cover, claims Siddiqa. It took her two years to write the book and three years to research it. Her earlier book was Pakistan’s Arms Procurement and Military Buildup, 1979-99.

By the way, It’s now banned in Pakistan. Happy Reading !!!

PS: For detailed discussion on the book, All Things Pakistan has something to offer too, and so does Teeth Maestro says in support to Dr Ayesha and on the banning of Military Inc..

PPS: It’s been posted on IMB late …!

PPPS: An interesting blog by a reader updating many events related to this publication.

A must read book for patriot Pakistan’s who want to get rid of the GENERAL’S EMPIRE in Pakistan & to understand it, its strengths & the inside of it.

I will sure try to get it at any cost. Its time we remind the military-class about its prime duty.

Its interesting to note that while the whole machinery came into act to stop this book coming into public, the LAL MASJID terrorist are free as bird in sky, wow, ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF LAWLESS-TAN

The way it was banned before reaching to bookstores, the title should be “Military Inc. Banned before Launch” =)

Just to clarify that the book has not been banned. the Islamabad Club book launch was. The book can be had from the markets but there is a waiting list to it. The good news is that the Oxford University Press will be reprinting it from June 8th .An Urdu translation is also being considered.

A few years ago it was a great shock for me to read the Hummod ur Rehman report and to know that our Pak (Sacred) Army, which is not accountable under NAB ordinance or any law. I never expected that our so PAK Army has killed Muslims in Bangladesh in the name of suppressing uprising. Then I thought that no one cares about what our Army did in Bangladesh. Our PAK (Sacred) Army has the desire to go into Afghanistan in the name of Jihad for saving Muslims, and they do not dare face India despite the fact that there are more Muslims in India. The only reason that I understand is the money after which PAAK army goes after, as there is no money for Jihad IN India, and there is more money in Jihad in Afghanistan so our Pak Army enters a neighbouring Muslim state and creates so called Taliban and deceives people by saying that the Army has got strategic depth in Afghanistan and spread Islam, Why no one asks the Army men, were there non Muslims in Bangladesh when they killed more Muslims in the so called uprising in East Pakistan and more Muslims were killed than partition of Pakistan.

This book by Dr. Ayesha is indeed a bold step and she has tried to show that our military is more interested in making money and not in saving country.
Since the so-called PAK (Sacred Cow) Army has ruled directly or indirectly since independence, Army is mainly responsible for our bad image in the comity of nations. How many Generals or Pak army of Zias regime have sent their sons to become mindless mujahids for so-called holy wars? None. Rather they send them to US or Europe to become experts of finance, actuaries and sons with low IQ become Officers in the PAK Forces and after some years they emerge as CSS officers for the quota reserved for the army officers.
How many sons of generals have opted to go for Kargil war? None, only the sons of poor or middle class were butchered there and then awarded the medals of honours for the so-called misadventure.
Our PAAK Army has changed the theories of employment, Once in Army, Always rich, always on job, always above law always the heroes even after killing more Muslims in the 1970-71 era. And now making more money than anyone else in the country.
Was Pakistan created for Army ? If we, Pakistanis are to be ruled by Army then wasn’t British Army better? When the people of Pakistan will liberate themselves form the Army rule, when will there be real freedom, free from Army and its B team, the Mullahs?

It is a good book and Dr. Ayesha has done a good job.

I agree with Majids’s comments but then again who is there to rule the country, the second alternative(Mullahs) is worse then the Army rule. Unfortunately its not only the Pakistan Army that has or is killing muslims but it is happening all over the world and it is a shame..Look at Palistine, muslims are fighting with each other and killing their own brothers on a daily basis and the same is happening in Iraq on a daily basis. Oh God when are we going to learn and unite together……All we can do is pray…that the good Lord give us the wisdom to think and do the right thing and to be able to tell between right and wrong..Ameen
