World Cancer Day : February 4th

World Cancer Day is marked today to raise awareness of the global impact of cancer and increase understanding of prevention, detection, treatment and care. The five-year initiative underscores habits that parents can share with children to prevent cancer later in life. It’s a striking statistic: 43% of cancers can be prevented through these healthy behaviors:

Provide a smoke-free environment for children
Be physically active, eat a balanced, healthy diet, and avoid obesity
Learn about vaccines for virus-related liver and cervical cancers
Avoid over-exposure to the sun

In Pakistan, Daily Times reports no official statistics on cancer patients are available due to the absence of a national cancer registry. Cancer hospitals in various parts of the country are the only source to have cancer related data, as record of patients registered and treated every year is maintained in every hospital.

Also, two-third of the cancer cases were caused by the environmental problems and the remaining 30 per cent by nutritional and reproductive problems.
