@montaleast13 - Well what do you know, I love cats too! I'm taking care of a few feral ones around my house in Islamabad. My mother too doesn't allow me to bring a cat in our house in Lahore. And I too am hopeful that some day I WILL get pet cats and care for them too!

Oh yeah, i love cats! If it was up to me i would have 'em all around me all the time. But the reality is that i have never had a chance to get one as a pet my whole life. Though i did befriend a few stray ones when i used to live in Mangla. It is always fun playing with cats.

PS: My mother never allowed me to have a pet cat. One of her rules was that animals are not allowed in the house. The other rule was i needed to take care of any pet i had. Now i realise that while rule #1 is easy, rule #2 is extremely hard to fulfill. :-)

PS2: I am still hopeful that some day i WILL get pet cats and care for them too, and that too outside the house. :-D hehe

Well, yes unfortunately we are not an animal friendly country and animals are given a real bad treatment here . A few days back I had seen a car coming at full speed outside Metro , hit two poor donkeys and the irony was the car driver escaped from the scene . But my question is if only animals are treated badly in this country or it is otherwise as well ? I would say even we as human beings don't get our fundamental rights fulfilled . Last Sunday, I happened to hit a man with a bottle full of water ( at Sial Chowk stop on motor way while I was returning from my hometown Lahore to my workplace Islamabad ) because he tried teasing me in public and guys you know what there were so many people around but nobody said a single word rather they were looking at me with inquisitive eyes as if I was at fault . What a society we have turned into ? Sometimes, i think if there is a single human being ( with morals, ethics, respect and love for others ) left in this country or we are all animals now where the powerful would suppress the weak .

Nice post Hashim and i also totally agree with crazymonkey. We really do need responsible people who can make sure that animal rights are protected, be it in the zoo or out on the streets. I wonder what amusement do people get on teasing or even injuring an animal.

In zoos, the sad sight of people throwing stuff at the animals is very common. In the streets the sight of stray animals getting hit with stones or getting tight nooses around their necks is pretty common.

I wonder what code of life are we all following. If we are not that much into religion (which tells us to be kind to humans as well as animals) then maybe we could pay a bit attention to general ethics. But whatever we do we truly need to learn that animals are supposed to be treated nicely, gently and with kindness. It is no fun harassing the poor creatures.

According to the novel The Life of Pi, which tells the story of an Indian child's adventure in the ocean with a 500 lb Bengal tiger, the purpose of a zoo is to provide shelter, protection, food, and a means of survival for the animals. The author says, in the character of Indian childs father who is the owner of the zoo, that out in the wild, the animals are unsafe, and they are vulnerable to attacks by superior predators. They need to fight for their survival everyday. They need to hunt for food and make sure their children get something to eat day and night. It's a hard life out there. Just look at all the feral cats around you. Do you think they are enjoying their life living in garbage cans? Cats are domestic animals and they need a home, and a sense of security.

But the entire purpose of a zoo fails when the animals are not even kept safe in an enclosure which was supposed to protect them in the first place. If they are harrassed every day by visitors, not given proper food and living conditions and are treated badly, then they are better off living in the wild where they were 'designed' to live. People think that the animal enjoys all the garbage and food throwing and that the animal would like to 'play' with the items they throw.

Protection for animals should be given more importance in our country, and proper maintenance of zoo's should be the top priority of organizations like the WWF.
