Moonlit Nights

Full Moon Rise.jpg Beware: The moon is full. People will party. Dogs will bite. Robbers will steal. Murderers will kill.

Though I risk sounding effeminized, the moon is an immensely beautiful object, something that you could just sit and gaze at. Man has always been fascinated by the moon and its beauty, and for the next few nights, so will be Islamabad. We have a waxing moon tonight and in about a week’s time it would reach its peak, glowing in its pale golden splendour.

Scientists have been greatly intrigued by the way shadows are cast on the moon making it look like its shape has changed as it revolves around the planet. Many of us have seen the Moon near the horizon, illuminating the Margalla Hills, and felt sure that it looked larger than later in the evening, as it rises.

Art thou pale for weariness
Of climbing heaven and gazing on the earth,
Wandering companionless
Among the stars that have a different birth,
And ever changing, like a Joyless eye
That finds no object worth its constancy?

-By Percy Bysshe Shelley

Studies have been carried out with disks of different diameters mounted so that they can slide on tracks, to determine why the Moon looks smaller and sometimes larger when there is nothing behind it but blue sky or stars. No one is sure, but apparently the presence of familiar objects along the horizon throws us off. If you find yourself among trees, try this one too. Observe the Moon with tree branches in the foreground. Now, walk a few paces to your right or left so that the Moon is hanging in clear sky with no branches in the way. It immediately looks smaller! You know it hasn’t changed size, but it looks like it has. Our brains compare the Moon to buildings and trees, and figure that it must be huge! Well, it is big; it’s 3,476 kilometers (nearly 2,150 miles) in diameter. That’s about a quarter the diameter of Earth. Although it’s a long way off–384,400 kilometers (almost 238,900 miles) away–when it’s low near the horizon, it looks like you could reach out and touch it.

The Moon is also something couples consider to be extremely romantic. And I don’t blame them, because the moon and the stars seem to have this effect on just about everyone. The phrase, ‘moonlit stroll’ is quite the common one. It’s hard not to find couples deeply in love, basking under the moon light, having dinner, taking a walk or just cuddling. It’s noticed all over the world and especially common when there’s a beautiful full moon out. So if you’ve got a partner, I would suggest that you go out next full moon and do something special. (Or use that full moon to find a partner) Admire the beauty of “Islamabad in the Moonlight”.

We are going to have a Full Moon next week on December 5h, so mark your calenders today.

The image of moon you’ve added in is so gripping that I couldn’t read the words written besides it … hoping they’d be good too :>

Well this is just an image. The real stuff, if you were to venture out into the Margallas on a cool October full moon night is absolutely divine.

I am sure the rest of the article would be interesting but I am not taking any chances. :)

We have many. They are usually found in the parliment house. And I think “Jaded” gave a detailed account of them in her 7th gift to the world
