The Centaurus Public Meeting on Monday 6 Aug 2007

Amazing how we just talked about the changing skyline and the weird naming of the building called ‘Centaurus’, that the next day this email circulates around the Pakistan web. I am Just forwarding this message which might help some of us, not me, at least.

Subject: URGENT: Come to the Centaurus Public Meeting on Monday 6 Aug 2007

Please Circulate widely. If you care for Islamabad, don’t just moan about its decline.

Come to the Public Meeting at the Convention Center (Islamabad) at 10.30 am on Monday 6 Aug 2007

Yes it is at an awkward time, 10:30am on a working day, but NGO bods should be making your views known about this wasteful project.

If you don’t turn up don’t complain if you tax money is used to the tune of Rs 1.62 Billion to build this monster for the filthy rich – only Rs 14 million for a one-bedroom apartment!

Journalists need to come and and write extensively about this. This will persuade the Pakistan Environmental protection Authority to act decisively. I think there is a need for the Supreme Court to take suo moto action against a lot of illegal practices that have become common in the capital.

See you there.

Isa Daudpota

I don’t know what the truth behind the claim is and if it is worth it going to the CC in the middle of work or not, but still this is not my type of an activity, have fun at the meeting.

How are our tax dollars being used? Isn’t it a private enterprise?

Just have it built and see how everything would be booked before hand … we live in a poor country owned by rich gazillions so accept it!!

ps; Pak-stallion – enlighten us too – but you’re online and meeting must be in progress :P

If i dont have 14 million dollars so i will not buy the apartment, simple!
.. but shall i block the way of the people who can afford it? ;-)
This is a private project, we can not stop it.

Building plazas does not translate into prosperity. Industralization and manufacturing is what Pakistan needs, not bogus plazas and hotels for the rich. These things are a byproduct of a healthy economy, not the lead points. Plus these guys flout each and every law when making their monstrosities… so all power to Isa Daudpota.

First of all, it’s not the taxpayers money that will be used to build the Centaurus. It’s mostly funded by foreign private investment. In fact Pakistan and Pakistanis have only to gain, and nothing to lose from this project. It brings in foreign exchange, it supports the growth of construction industry, it provides employment to labour, it will bring in a new premium hotel as existing 5-stars are already overcrowded. Probably a big hypermarket will be set up in one of the buildings, which will provide a good shopping experience to the residents of Islamabad. And most of all, it would be a beautiful addition to the skyline of Islamabad.

These people always create the impression as if the government is spending public money on such grandiose projects when millions are living in poverty and basic amenities are absent from many parts of the country. The truth is that it’s not the public money which is spent on such projects. And we can’t expect the private sector investors to provide us basic amenities instead of building what is profitable for them.
